Layer Cake

Layer Cake - Colm Meaney, Daniel Craig, George Harris

Layer Cake is a very good British movie, made with Hollywood in mind, more in early Guy Richie’s style. Now this one uses a lot of John Woo special effects and in this computer era, one has to be Hanecke to still want to spend money for special locations or decors. It is dynamic and has a catchy action, not very logical, but who cares? It is with mob, drugs, killing, action and all of them at a very fast pacing, with a little dash of sex, just for completion. Director Matthew Vaughn, the close … [Read more...]

World War Z!

World War Z - The scarf wearing Brad Pitt

I knew it from the beginning that I'm going to waste precious time watching this ridiculous movie. I never was fond of zombies, nor of Brad Pitt. I remember his advert to Levis 501, I didn't know at the time it was him taking that bath on the river, the Amish girl excitedly waiting behind a tree, the focus was on the pair of jeans he has hidden under his underwear. When they launched Legends of the Fall, I was in France. I went to cinema and watch the movie in French, so his bad acting wasn't so … [Read more...]

Elite Squad 2

August 14, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Elite Squad 2 (Portuguese: Tropa de Elite 2 – O Inimigo Agora é Outro; literal: Elite Troop 2: Now the Enemy Is Another One) is a 2010 Brazilian film directed and produced by José Padilha, starring Wagner Moura. The other actors appeared somehow in the other film as well, some are new here. It is a sequel of the 2007 movie The Elite Squad. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is a continuation of the semi-fictional account of the BOPE (Portuguese: Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais), the Special … [Read more...]

Tropa de Elite

August 2, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Tropa de Elite or Elite Squad, as sounds the English translation, is a Brazilian action movie, one of the best ever made. The international critic is almost for the first time in agreement. It has an 8.0 imdb rate, a very big one. The Elite Squad was an outstanding commercial success, and became a cultural phenomenon in Brazil. The film won the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Its sequel, The Elite Squad - The Enemy Within, released in Brazil on October 8, 2010, holds industry … [Read more...]

The American

January 13, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

George Clooney is one of my favorite actors. I have a lot of favorites, I can brag for days about them, about why I like one or another. As you noticed, I'm going to write a few words about The American, an European film in which the above mentioned favorite actor of mine is top star. It is a 2010 release, it is a movie directed by the Dutch Anton Corbijn, with an action taking place in Northern Italy. Clooney is not a stranger at all in Italy, he has property there, and was also deeply involved … [Read more...]

Bruckheimer

Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock

If you want any great movie subject to look cheap and utterly unbelievable, as in brainwashing unbelievable, you give it to Jerry to produce that movie. If Inception would have been produced by the “action” master, it would have been now a merely 7.0 imdb rated, and that owed maybe to Leo, if he would accept to act in that conditions. Returning to Bruckheimer, it seems he’s trying to throw back the old Hollywood pattern, which guided the movie makers for decades: “A film is a story, … [Read more...]
