Spirited Away and Other Stories

December 12, 2011 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

An animation movie from one of the most acclaimed directors from Japan, Spirited Away is maybe the first movie of his genre, figuring in the Top 250 list on imdb, on a position very hard to alter and for people who haven't seen it, utterly unbelievable, position 45. I haven't said it's the first animation to make that particular top, which is not as the imdb rating system, is something different and complex, his position is the first, ahead of a lot of other "famous" movies. As subjective as any … [Read more...]

Yet more Woody

October 13, 2011 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 3 Comments

I became a fan of Woody Allen's movies. I liked him before as well, but now, I declare myself a fan, a bottomless admirer. His last three movies are brilliant, Whatever Works is from far away my favorite, with all the different opinions I received on various media (reddit for sample), that Manhattan is the best Woody Allen ever. I don't know why I haven't followed my intuition to answer on spot, that I doubted it, not watching the movie at the time, but I'm pretty sure now. I'm not saying … [Read more...]

Jews as in “Jaws” but with “e”

Barney's Version - Paul Giamatti, Rosamund Pike

Yes, that's right. The title is no mistake and neither is the category. This post is about "movies", or  Motion Pictures, as I call them, and I still prefer to publish here before I do so anywhere else. There's this prestigious website that's invited me to write stuff about movies, but I prefer to keep my work original and post it here first, despite the 'royal' treatment I've been shown. Don't worry, I'm kidding. I'll still write for both, of course. So it's Jews today, or rather one Jew … [Read more...]

Greenberg, an American domestic drama

Greenberg - Rhys Ifans

I can say that I like a lot Ben Stiller. Greenberg is the last movie I saw, in which Stiller is starring with verve, the last I've liked him, not having the patience to wait Little Fockers to end, mostly because of Alba ("Andy Garcia") and the screenplay. The "top critics" from Rotten Tomatoes, with all the good leverage from the public and the votes on imdb, (6.2  out of 10) can only to express themselves in a neighing concerto, almost dismembering Stiller's performance, acclaiming Gerwig's. … [Read more...]

Some good things about Woody Allen

June 2, 2011 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 4 Comments

Woody Allen in "Annie Hall"

Woody Allen is one of the most prolific artists in Hollywood. Director, actor, producer, writer, screenwriter, everyone may ask what he is not, and sometimes, Woody Allen is just too much. Not the funniest guy on earth, but he is sometimes funny and simultaneously deep, which is rare. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Cassandra's Dream (2007), Scoop (2006), Match Point (2005), Melinda and Melinda (2004), Anything Else (2003) are considered all comedies, but they're just as forgettable as any … [Read more...]

The Controversial Film Director

Lars von Trier between Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsborough

I waited a few days before approaching the Lars von Trier freaky banning from Cannes Festival. I'm going to quote from various sources a few things, and I'll let you know my own opinion about the event. I'm trying hard to find the movie these days. "With his film, Melancholia, playing In Competition, the director spoke at the festival’s press conference for the film, and stated, amongst many other things, that he sympathized with Hitler, joked about being a Nazi, and even called Israel a … [Read more...]
