George Clooney Again, With an Oscar Nomination

February 10, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

The Ides of March is another film made by George Clooney, and it was launched in 2011 by Sony Pictures Entertainment. It got a 7.4 imdb rate the moment I'm writing this post. A good political movie, actually a very good one. It's nominated for an Oscar for the Best Writing for an Adapted Screenplay, on which the screenwriters are George Clooney again, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon (the play writer of "Farragut North", the 2008 play used as inspiring platform for the film). Idus Martii … [Read more...]

Killer Elite

February 7, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

This kind of "action" movie thriller is not quite my type, but Dominic Purcell (Linc the Sink), and why not accept, a small curiosity about Robert DeNiro, made me buy it. I wanted to write about this yesterday, but I made some coding mistakes and I worked almost four hours to remedy, so this is the result of a recent rush. I liked the movie, my friends, all of them were good, it implied the British Special Forces, SAS, or at least the subject was inspired from real events and these events … [Read more...]

56 Movies or, The Year 2008 in Cinema

Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire

It seems year 2008 is my favorite year regarding movie production, in the new millennium so far. It is the year of The Dark Knight (8.9) and Slumdog Millionaire (8.2). It is the year of Twilight, the iconic start of a successful saga in a genre I thought was "made up" for a special category of kids, the "Young Adult" genre. Anyway, that was the time when I have heard for the first time of them. I know, Sarah Michelle Gellar already made Buffy the Vampire Slayer famous on American Television … [Read more...]

Nominees and Winners

January 26, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

It was imperative to publish the Academy Awards Nominees, this being this blog's spirit, a blog started as an opinionated expression in contemporary culture, especially the cinema, the seventh art, probably the best form of expression our days. A lot of surprises, some notable absences, but the Academy rules, and it won't be the first time when this pages express a different view regarding the Oscars and the Golden Globes, only for the moment, there will be no views yet. This year's Globes were … [Read more...]

Edge of Darkness

January 25, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Edge of Darkness is a movie with another actor I appreciate a lot. I like him as an actor and filmmaker, because he is a real artist, no matter his flaws in his private life. Are we appreciate less the inventor of the History of Religions as a science, who was somehow a nazi in his native country, his political obedience considered a "young age's flaw", or Celine, or Oscar Wilde, both pro Hitler in their times? I don't believe so. On the contrary, I think people or critics avoid to mention it. … [Read more...]

The American

January 13, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

George Clooney is one of my favorite actors. I have a lot of favorites, I can brag for days about them, about why I like one or another. As you noticed, I'm going to write a few words about The American, an European film in which the above mentioned favorite actor of mine is top star. It is a 2010 release, it is a movie directed by the Dutch Anton Corbijn, with an action taking place in Northern Italy. Clooney is not a stranger at all in Italy, he has property there, and was also deeply involved … [Read more...]
